Spectators gathered for the National Pancake Eating Contest, it was a traditional event born of good will and a God fearing, midwestern sensibility that makes one fanatically interested in breakfast food. Children buzzed with excitement, women silently stood there without talking because women are not allowed to speak, men pulled up stools at the bakery with napkins tucked in their shirts. It was time for the big event...
Jackie Do Not entered through the door like a cowboy in an old western; Everyone turned and stared. Records of that day are scant from the Great Molasses Flood that wiped out half the town but eye witness accounts say that he ate no less than 69,420 pancakes in 4.34 minutes. It was a spectacle that changed a small town in Indiana forever. The women are still prohibited from speaking to this day.
